The CallForHelp Administrator's Tutorial
is a step-by-step process in learning how to create ComboPages and work
in the CallTheShots environment.
System Requirements
CallTheShots is currently broadening
our horizons in terms of support for the myriad of browsing preferences
on the World Wide Web. Because the Macintosh and Netscape versions of
our software will launch imminently, during beta testing we require
the following:
· A computer running Windows 95 or higher
· A connection to the Internet
· An Internet Explorer browser v4.0 or higher with JavaScript enabled
and cookies accepted
· The minimum monitor setting is 800x600 although we recommend 1024x768.
In Internet Explorer, JavaScript is enabled by clicking on the TOOLS
menu and selecting Internet Options. Click on the Security tab and select
Custom Levels. In the dialog box that opens, scroll down to Scripting
and click the Enable button underneath Active Scripting. Click the OK
buttons all the way through until all Internet Options windows are closed.
From our home page (http://www.calltheshots.com), clickthrough the Partners
link to the Partners Login where you will type in your Partner ID, User
ID and Password. (This information is supplied to you by CallTheShots.)
Clicking on Sign In will take you to the Administrator's Start Page.
Start Page
The default Start Page for a new account is the All ComboPages screen;
this screen lists all the ComboPages and ComboPage folders created by
the Administrator. If this is your first login, you should see only
the Navigation Bar across the top of the screen and the admin Folder.
(You have the option of leaving this screen as your default or you can
change it to a specific ComboPage - perhaps the one you are currently
working on). Either way the Start Page is the screen that CallTheShots
will load upon your Sign In. Now, let's make a ComboPage!
ComboPage
A ComboPage is a document onto which you grab 'blocks' from one or a
multitude of web sites. Once it is saved and opened in User Mode, this
page becomes the 'well' from which the user can choose their favorite
pieces. From the default All ComboPages screen, click on the top, center
button that is marked New Combo. This will bring you to a screen from
which you can browse web sites and grab information blocks. To start
your new ComboPage, type in the URL of the site you'd like to browse
in the top, left field of your screen and click 'Get'. Browse the web
site through this framework until you get to the page from which you'd
like to 'Grab' sections. Click the Grab It! Button. This action will
take you to the Grab It! window. (You can skip one step by directly
typing in the URL you want to browse from the Start Page. This action
will take you directly to the Grab It! Window.)
Grab It! Window
When you have found a portion of the web site that you would like to
include in your ComboPage click on the Grab It! Button to break this
web page into blocks that you may select. (If you decide not to select
anything from this page, either type in a new address and click Get
or follow a link on this page, and any subsequent pages, until you find
what you want.) Clicking on the Grab It! button will take you to the
ComboPage Selection Screen.
ComboPage Selection Screen
The ComboPage Selection Screen is divided into two frames. The top frame
consists of the web page you grabbed. The web page is divided into 'blocks'
from which to choose from. The bottom frame is for previewing the blocks
you have grabbed. To grab a block, just click in the check boxes located
in the top, left corner of the desired areas. This will select that
section and it alone will appear in the preview window (below). (If
you want the whole page selected as a block, click on the Select All
check box at the top left of the page.) To deselect a section, just
click on the check box again. If you wish to see the sections broken
into smaller sections, click on Zoom In. (Zoom In enables you, for instance,
to segregate images and ads from actual content, streamlining the blocks
to include only the pertinent information.) When you have selected what
you want from that site, you can name the block by typing your preference
in the Change Title box. Afterwards, click the Finish Combo button.
You will be taken to the ComboPage Properties screen where you can name
and save your ComboPage.
ComboPage Properties
The ComboPage Properties screen is where you save the ComboPage you
have started. There are two ways to save: as a new page and as an addition
to an already existing page. To save as a new page, you must name it,
choose the folder in which it will reside, decide if you would like
this to be your default Start Page and choose whether to save this page
as clip art. (Saving a page as clip art is basically approving it for
access to those in User mode. Leaving this block unchecked would allow
only Administrator access.) Click the Save Combo button to complete.
To save the block as an addition to an existing ComboPage, choose the
page name from the Append To pull-down menu and click Append Combo.
The block will be added to that page. A Complete Administrator's Folder
Following the above steps time and again would ultimately give the Administrator
a myriad of subject-defined (or web site delineated) ComboPages which
could than be accessible to all their users.
FAQs

A: A Start Page is a ComboPage which automatically loads whenever you
log into your CallTheShots account. The default Start Page is the All
ComboPages screen. There are two ways to designate a ComboPage as a
Start Page:
1. The easiest way to do it is when you are saving a new ComboPage.
To do so, click on the check box next to the words 'Make this ComboPage
my Start Page'. When you are finished with the Properties page click
the Save Combo button.
2. The other way to specify a Start Page is to use an existing ComboPage.

the ComboPage to, using the pull-down menu below the ComboPage listings.
Click OK on the dialog box.
Q: How do I rename, delete or create a
folder?
A: All three of these actions can be completed on the ComboManager screen.
1. How to rename a folder: Check the box next to the name of the folder
you wish to rename. Click the Rename Folder portion of the 'Folder'
toolbar. A dialog will appear prompting you for the new name of the
folder. Type the name and click OK.
2. How to delete a folder: Check the box next to the name of the folder
you wish to delete. Click the Delete Folder portion of the 'Folder'
toolbar. A dialog will appear prompting you to click OK or Cancel. (Note:
deleting a folder will also delete whatever ComboPages were in the folder.)
3. How to create a new folder: Click the Create New Folder portion of
the 'Folder' toolbar. A dialog will appear prompting you for the name
of the new folder. Type the name and click OK.
Q: How do I change my Password?

in this page. Then select Edit Profile from the Quick Navigation bar.
In the Profile Manager, check the 'Enable advanced features' box. Click
Save and repeat steps 1 and 2.)
Q: What do I need to do so that my username
and my password are not saved on my computer?
A: There are three ways to do this:

the 'Remember my Username and Password' box. Click Save.
3. When you are ready to leave CallTheShots, just remember to go to
the Quick Navigation bar and select Logout.
Q: How do I create a ComboPage?
A: Follow the steps below.
· Type the web site's address in the Get field. Then click the Get button.
· Browse the web site until you get to the page from where you wish
to grab sections.
· Click the Grab It! button.
· Click on the check boxes of the areas of the page you wish to grab.
Your selections will appear in the previewing window.
· When you have selected what you want from that site, click the Finish
Combo button.
· Click the Save Layout button.
· Name your ComboPage and set the other properties in the Properties
page. · Click the Save Combo button.
Q: A section of my ComboPage is empty
or has a message in it. What does that mean?
A: When this happens, it could mean a number of things:
· The information from the section may not have loaded properly. You
may want to click the Refresh or Reload button to see if that will remedy
the problem.
· The web site's server may be too busy to provide service at this time.
· The web site may be temporarily down.
· The address or the URL of the section may have been moved.
· The information in the section or even the web site itself may no
longer be online. (If you decide it is one of the last two reasons,
you may need to edit or delete those sections. See How do I edit a ComboPage?
for more details.)
Q: Are there any tips you can suggest
that will make my ComboPage better?
A: There are many ways to make a great ComboPage and you will find lots
of them as you hone your skills as a HotShot. Here are a few neat tips
to help you along the way:
· Grab sections from web sites that get updated on a regular basis.
This is one of the best things about CallTheShots; if you grab a section
of daily news or a live camera, they will always update when you view
those sections in your ComboPage.
· Try not to grab too many sections that take are likely to take up
a lot of memory, like big images. These will tend to cause your ComboPage
to be slow when it loads.
· Make sure to name the different blocks of your ComboPage. This will
make them more easily recognizable and you won't have to grab memory-eating
title images from the site. To do this, just type a title into the upper-right
Change Title text field of the previewing window of the ComboPage Selection
Screen.
Q: How do I send a ComboPage to a friend?
A: Go to the ComboPage you wish to send. (Note: make sure that the 'Make
this ComboPage publicly readable' box has been checked in this ComboPage's
Properties screen before proceeding with the next step.) Click the envelope
button at the top of the screen. In the 'To' field, type the email address
of the person you wish to send a copy of your ComboPage. When you are
finished typing in the text of the email, click the Send button. The
following questions refer to the HotStuff Directory, a community listing
of ComboPages created by beta users of CallTheShots software.
Q: Can I share a ComboPage that I found
in the HotStuff directory with a friend?
A: You can email any ComboPage, or what we call a HotPage in the HotStuff
directory, to anyone. Go to the Quick Navigation bar and select HotStuff.
Find the HotPage you wish to send and click it to view it. Click the
envelope button at the top of the screen. In the 'To' field, type the
email address of the person you wish to send this HotPage. When you
are finished typing in the text of the email, click the Send button.
Q: How do I add my ComboPage to the HotStuff
directory?
A: There are two ways to do this:
1. When you are originally saving your ComboPage, at the ComboPage Properties
screen, click the 'Make this ComboPage publicly readable' check box
and then select its appropriate category and subcategory.
2. If you decide at a later date that you want to add your ComboPage
to HotStuff, go to that ComboPage and click the Properties button at
the top of the page. This will bring you to the ComboPage's properties.
Click the 'Make this ComboPage publicly readable' check box and then
select its appropriate category and subcategory.
Q: How do I link to a ComboPage that I
saw in HotStuff?
A: Go to the Quick Navigation bar and select HotStuff. Browse to the
HotPage with which you'd like to make a link, or what we call a Shortcut.
Click the Create Shortcut button. Fill out the Shortcut Properties page
and click Save.
Q: How do I delete a Shortcut to a ComboPage?
A: As a shortcut is listed as a ComboPage, the steps for deleting one
are the same for deleting a ComboPage. See How do I delete a ComboPage?
Q: I sent an email with a ComboPage I
just created and the recipient can't see the page.
A: Sometimes the ComboPage cannot be directly opened from the email.
You may want to suggest to the recipient to copy the ComboPage's address
to the location bar of their web browser and then click enter or return.
Q: I want to create a ComboPage from a
secure web site but it seems as though I can't.
A: We currently do not support the creation of ComboPages from secure
web sites.
Q: What is a parameterized ComboPage and
how do I create one?
A: A parameterized ComboPage allows you to perform searches on a specific
subject from one or more web sites at one time. For example, if you
wanted to get prices from online music stores for a particular CD, you
can do this with a parameterized ComboPage. Here are simple instructions
on how you can create one:
· Enter a web site address in the Get field, like www.amazon.com. For
this example, we will search for a music artist by web site and do a
comparison price shop.
· Perform a search for an artist using Amazon's music search.
· Click the Grab It! button when the search results appear and check
only the boxes for the search results.
· You will notice that the preview screen, in addition to a Change Title
box, has a parameter box. It is here that you will type in something
like Search for the following artist: (A parameterized box will always
ask the user what they want to search for. It is up to the Administrator
to pose the question.) Note: at this point you have the option to repeat
steps 1 through 4 for another online music store, for instance, CDNow.
· Click Finish Combo when you have a few parameterized boxes.
· Fill in the information for your new ComboPage in the ComboPage Properties
window.
· Notice that the 'This ComboPage is parametric' box is checked. (This
box should be checked if all blocks in this page are parameterized.
If only one block in a page is parameterized than uncheck this box.)
· You also have the option to enter a parameter name that will appear
next to your search box. An example for this ComboPage might be, 'Search
for this CD'.
· Click Save.
· Now with your new parameterized ComboPage, you can do a search for
any other CD by typing the name in the search box at the top of your
ComboPage.
Q: How do I remove the search function
from the top of my ComboPage?
A: Make sure that the advanced features are enabled in your user profile.
To check this, select Edit Profile from the Quick Navigation bar. Click
the 'Enable advanced features' box if it's not checked. Click Save and
go to the ComboPage from which you wish to remove the search function.
Click the Properties button and un-check the 'This ComboPage is parametric'
box. Click Save.
